Valid Residence Permits and Visas in Portugal Accepted Until June 30, 2025

 

All residence permits and visas that expired on or after February 22, 2020, are now considered valid until June 30, 2025, according to Article 16, Nos. 1 and 8, of Decree-Law No. 10-A/2020, as amended on March 13.

This measure includes a wide range of documents, such as:

• Residence Permits (including CPLP Residence Permits)
• Certificates of Registration for EU Nationals
• Residence Cards for EU Nationals and Their Family Members
• Short-term, Temporary Stay, and Residence Visas
• Other relevant documents

Furthermore, the Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum (AIMA) clarifies that this regulation applies to various entities and services, including:

• Institute of Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP)
• Social Security Institute
• Tax Authority (AT)
• National Health Service (SNS)
• Local Authorities (Municipal and Parish Councils)
• Banks
• Employers
• And many other entities

This means that all foreign citizens with any type of expired visa or residence permit since February 22, 2020, are guaranteed the right to stay, leave, and enter Portugal using these documents. These documents remain accepted by all Portuguese public authorities for all legal purposes until June 30, 2025.

Please note that this extension of validity is restricted to Portugal and binds Portuguese public authorities. Entry and travel in other Schengen Area states remain subject to the conditions set forth in the Schengen Borders Code.
